D'Angelo Ponds, CB Indiana

D'Angelo Ponds is the type of competitive, athletic and playmaking cornerback that the Niners should want in their secondary. He is not the prototypical, big boundary corner, but he is a dawg. Would love to get this guy early on day 2.

Almost a Stout clone, is on my preseason watch list and he did well this year.
If he was a few inches taller he'd be an early to mid first round lock. Absolute baller. I see so much of Jason Verrett in his game.

Agree. Nobody will have JVs feet but this kid is an absolute dawg; one of my favorite CBs in the draft. IDGAF about his size; he plays much MUCH bigger. People will want to pin him in at slot but he can play boundary in the league, mark my words

I DGAF either, but I saw multiple instances last season where Stout's lack of size and strength showed up, especially against Seattle and LA. I'd be lying to myself if I pretend it didn't happen. The most notable one was on the 3rd and 17 crack toss vs Seattle in the regular season where Stout gets pushed around by 3 different Seattle players despite fighting like hell. Stout gets displaced and his man ends up sealing Bethune.

While the lack of size and strength won't show up in most games, it's absolutely going to show up in the most important games within the division. I guess you have to weigh how much you're willing to give up in those divisional games vs the rest of the schedule. Not a deal breaker necessarily, but something that definitely shouldn't be ignored.

The son of my high school classmate. Would love him in our secondary. I'm pretty forgiving of our group this year considering they were working with no pass rush.

Completely understand where you are coming from. But I also think it's kind of unfair to say because it happened to Stout; it's gonna happen to Ponds, based solely on size. One came from Western Kentucky; the other is coming from the undefeated National Champs, and was the best CB on a team that faced much better competition. They aren't exactly an apples to apples comparison and if he lacks a little in run support (due to size cause it ain't effort) but is consistently locking up the man in front of him, I take that all day.
If we try to upgrade at CB because the staff doesn't trust Green, I really hope we find a way to grab Ponds in the 2nd. He's so fun to watch play, and I'm surprised more fans haven't been talking about him in this thread.

CB1 Demo
CB2 Ponds
NB Stout

That starting unit would be pure entertainment with their skill set, competitiveness, and fiery attitudes. We'd also have 3 dawgs who love to tackle and don't shy away from physical play.
