The Krueg fella thinks Houston could really use him and would be willing to give up Aerionte Ersery and a 4th. I don't know how he thinks Houston would do that. Is Ersery any good and does he fit in here? He's only in his 2nd year and the position could then be put on the back burner.
If no trade and no agreement-Trent has a known propensity to hold out. Let's say the team and him engage in a stare down session all the way to the end of preseason. The season starts and no Trent. His base pay is $32 million-close to $2 million per game. I don't think he has that much pride to miss out on those paychecks. For the niners to go that route they'd have to pick his replacement in the 1st round. When the first round ends no more Mr. Nice Guy. The team has other personnel issues and they've dealt with enough distractions at WR. If he reports they'll have to make sure he stays healthy for any suitors.
In this whack-a-mole strategy a 2nd round pick cannot be expected to fill their biggest need at DE so they may have to plug the hole with a one year mercenary like Joey Bosa or Clowney and put it off till next year. They did that with the 2 WR's and Greenlaw and should do it at LG-think Bitonio who doesn't get injured. Their 2nd and a 4th pick could be used to move higher in the 2nd round where they could pick that speed rusher or future WR stud. There's also the possibility of a Mac Jones trade. The only team out there left would be Pittsburg. Jones should start. It's good for the league.

We've got by cause of good coaching and scheme but it's also held us back a lot. Our depth is always horrible cause we never draft guys and outside of Trent - everyone's average. Mckivitz had a really solid year, so that's awesome but he took like 4-5 years to develop.

Plus, the one guy they did draft with a high pick was deemed to be "not worth the price" after his rookie contract expired. Mike McGlinchey is now holding down the fort in Denver and appears to be doing just fine.

If there is one position group where Shanahan and Lynch have not done well with finding diamonds in the rough, it's OL. They rarely add to that group. When they do, it's a 6th or 7th round pick. Those guys last for a year or two and then *POOF.* They gone. If Bill Walsh left a playbook behind for the keys to finding great OL in the middle rounds, I hope someone has studied it. He was good at it.

I hope they hit paydirt in this upcoming draft. It appears Shanahan and Lynch are going to draft a replacement for TW. I hope so. Just watching TW's play last season was rather painful.
They should just guarantee his last year provided he shows up. Then cut the dead losses for next season.

Trent is an NFL vested veteran
As soon as he is on the roster Day 1 the entire contract for the season is guaranteed

He wants a FUTURE season also guaranteed....that is absolutely nuts for us to do with a 38+ year old OT
Trent doesn't want a team friendly future deal...he wants big money

Yet we keep winning.

Are you saying this is why we haven't been able to win the super bowl or are you simply pointing out our financial investment in our OL?

Is he on the roster if he doesn't report? They certainly wouldn't have to pay him. I say 2 can play this game. Make him prove he has the upper hand. A Saturday night-like massacre purge with him and Aiyuk would be awesome on June 1 if there was compensation.

That ain't happening, they only have $14M in cap room, they'd need $33.06M to just acquire him before they can redo his deal, they'd have to redo Nico Collins to save $14.276M and Azeez to save $7.275M, that is $35.551M, then they have to pay their draft class, that's not enough, and those are the only 2 players that they can redo to save significant cap room.

Edit: Forgot to mention that they intend on extending Will Anderson Jr., which will require cap room to do so as he has the minimum base salary and a small training camp roster bonus.

The vested veteran status activates day 1 of the regular season if they are on the 53 man roster

It's why the teams cut role player veterans they plan on keeping then sign them back on day 2

It's part of the 53 opening day roster shuffle.
Usually IR spots open up and the vested veteran comes back with a non guaranteed salary

No way in hell do we cut Trent and expect to sign him back...he is not a role player who needs a job
Matt Maiocco had an excellent take on left tackles on the succession plan for most teams in the NFL. They either trade for someone else's or the draft and that draft player steps right into the starting role LINK. Based on that IF the Niners take at 27 a left tackle, for me that will signal that they are moving on from Trent Williams and you can expect that player to start. I don't see them trading as they did for Staley or Williams as they don't have the capital now unless a team is willing to take future picks. If the Niners don't take a left tackle in their first two picks, then I would expect that they come to terms with Williams and I would look for him to be traded on draft day, probably to Houston. Then again Shanahan said today that they want to keep Williams so it will be interesting to see what direction they go. I also agree with Maiocco that with the addition of Evans and Kirk, Purdy should be able to release the ball quicker in 2026 and that will take some pressure off the OL. We still need to be able to open up the running game but with passing threats that might also cause openings that weren't there last year since teams did not fear any deep threat from us.
The dude is good. The Best. But he doesnt have two great years left in him.
Whats the dammage if we cut him/ trade him?

Use that money to try and sign someone decent in the next round of cuts and draft high

You get rid of him and you got a giant hole on the left side to go along with all the other holes on the line. Taking a swing on a draft pick isn't the answer unless you can take a big enough swing near the top of the draft.

Does he have a no trade clause? Sorry if it's already been answered
